The Problem with Rigid SEO Packages Based on a Set Number of Keywords

No two businesses are the exact same, and each business’s path to the highest organic ranks of the search engine results pages (SERPs) will be unique. Even businesses within the same vertical serve different demographics and may target vastly different geographic areas. The way consumers search for a product or service is also going to be different based on factors like regional nomenclature and variations in demand as dictated by local conditions and seasonality. Our team has experience offering packages structured around a set number of keywords, but we discovered we were missing out on a lot of strategic opportunities outside of those specific terms when taking that rigid approach. At REV77, we customize our SEO strategies by taking into account a variety of variables, which means we don’t limit our clients to a specific number of keywords. Our current approach to SEO starts with a strategy session, during which the client provides broad ‘topics’ or ‘categories’ based on their goals. This allows the SEO team to research high search volume keywords within those broad topics/categories. We then have the ability to target many different terms, as well as semantic variations of those terms, within the blog and visual content that is created by our team each month.

The following is an example of the strategy we may pursue for an HVAC client:

Topic: Heating Service Possible Keywords : Heating Repair, Heater Installation, Heater Maintenance, Heating Company, Heating specialist, why is my heater not working, reliable heating technician, how often do I need my heater checked? Having our copy and design team create content around these search terms on a monthly basis gives us visibility into a couple things:

  • Trending topic/category based on which terms are receiving highest search volume
  • Specific keywords within the monthly content that are driving the most search queries

This allows us to constantly finetune our content and mix of keywords to align with the client’s business goals while improving the density of high search volume terms within a client’s website. By utilizing this strategy, we are not only able to target broad topics as a whole, but we are also able to build up a websites’ ‘keyword’ catalog. The end result is more frequent appearance in search engine results pages (SERPs) for more variations of the semantic and related terms searchers may be using when looking for a business’s products and services. This approach is more flexible than simply choosing a set number of keywords at the beginning of a campaign, applying a rigid keyword strategy and hoping it will have a positive result.
